I also managed to get hold of Alan Thirkettle, ESA’s ISS Programme Manager, shortly after confirmation of solar array deployment. Here’s what he had to say about today’s events. <br />

“We’re now two hours into the mission. The launch itself and the performance of the Ariane was magnificent. The re-ignition of the EPS stage was fantastic. The ATV separated right on time, in the right position. We’ve got the solar arrays deployed. We’ve acquired data. We’ve got ourselves stable. Attitude control systems is working properly. The power is now up. We’re very very happy indeed."<br />

"Its been quite a long day, I’m tired but for all the right reasons - it’s a good feeling. But this is the beginning of a long journey for ATV, and ATV still has plenty of work to do. We feel very very proud of what the entire team has done. Its great to hear how many people have turned out to see the launch at the various ESA centres around Europe – it gives us even more motivation to do what we do.”
