Spectacular end to a great space mission. I have been watching the ATV and the ISS chase each other overhead these last few weeks. Now anxiously awaiting for the Hubble maintenance and repair mission.
Space seems to already be a busy place. The Chinese have launched a three-person crew to orbit and private company SpaceX has finally gotten their Falcon 1 to orbit, space will be that so much busier now.

I am interested in the spectrum analysis of the ablation and materials that correspond to the spectrum. Keep us posted.

These photos are absolutely spectacular! How fortunate they were able to direct the reentry into the ocean instead of a neighborhood. I would hate to think of what that would be like!

I saw the re-entry, looked close to the second image, a central light, surrounded by a diffuse glow, trailing red fragments, only a few. Looked like a flare, lasted about 2 seconds, looked as if directly overhead, going south, at approx 20:45 local time. Did not expect to see it. Observed from Vancouver BC Canada.

Hi Neil: It is unlikely that you saw Jules Verne - it didn't pass anywhere near Vancouver. Also, the reentry took place beginning around 06:30 PST yesterday, much earlier than when you saw something. Finally, the reentry lasted several minutes, not just a few seconds. Best regards from ATV CC -- Daniel

Daniel, you are right, I could not have seen the Re-entry over the South Pacific. What I saw matched, it was a re-entry, too slow to be a meteor, certainly spectacular sight.

On the night of Sept 29, 2008 I observed 3 objects from Calgary, Alta. at 19:21 local time. They were directly west heading SW over the mountains. Sighting lasted about 10 minutes until the last one disappeared behind the horizon. I didn't know what they were until I saw the story about the Jules Verne ATV re-entry so I assumed this is what I saw until I saw the comment from Neil Rankine of Vancouver and the reply you gave to him. I will provide you with the web address at Flickr.com if you would care to check out the photos. Your input on this would be appreciated. Thanks
