Dec 23 2009 MEX-VMC Composite of Valles Marineris and Argyre Planitia ---- Composite image of MEX-VMC images taken on December 23, 2009. ---- The raw images were then converted to rgb.png files using Gordan Ugarkovic's VMC2RGB utility with flatfield correction. MEX-VMC Images No 11, 15, 19, and 24 were coordinated to Image No 19. The set was converted to 16-bit, then increased in size 5x. All the images werecontrast-adjusted to image no 24. Layer masks were used to blend the mosaic. The final image is a HiPassLRGB composite. ---- To make the RGB Color layer, a Hue/Saturation level was added (+40) and a Channel Mix layer was added (R: +170%Red, -50%Green, -20%Blue; G: -20%Red, +140%Green, -20%Blue; B: -50%Red, -20%Green, +170% Blue). The color image was Gaussian Blurred 1.5 pixels. ---- To make the luminance (L) layer, the unblurred color layer was converted using a B&W conversion layer with R:+60%,Y:+70%,G:+70%, C:+20%, B: +50%, M: +50%). The luminance layer was combined in the stack with the Luminance blending mode. Above this was placed another B&W converted layer, this time with a 30 pixel HiPass filter that was blended with the other layers in the stack. A final Curves layer were added to make the final composite. ---- The combined image was then downsampled to 100% and rotated so that north is at top. ---- In the image, Valles Marineris and Eos Chaos can be seen at top center. To make the image, raw images No 8 and No 16 were processed through the rgb2png utility, then image No 8 was aligned and placed under image No 16. Contrast for No.8 was adjusted to match as well as a blending mask added. Then an overall curves layer was added, followed by a Channel mix layer, then Hue/Saturation was increased +50 and a second curves layer added. Known residual artifacts were clone stamped out. Then a copy was converted to grayscale using a B&W conversion layer, and this image HIPassed by 5 pixels and overlaid onto the Gaussian blurred color layer. ESA Mars Express, Venus Express and Rosetta spacecraft operations team members at ESA/ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany, on, of course, 7 August 2009. Hannes Griebel: Mars Express Limb Observation - The images used are based on the raw images and were processed in the following way: 1. the Moiré pattern was removed, 2. the color saturation was adjusted, 3. the clarity (contrast) was enhanced. The brightness distribution accross a single image is a camera effect and has not been removed. The streak appearing in each image is an artifact (perhaps on the camera lens). To make the mosaic the individual pictures were geometrically corrected to match a map. Images towards the equator are larger in coverage but lower in resolution as the spacecraft moves away from the planet. A screenshot from the MAPPS science planning software shows the approximate position of the spacecraft for the observation and annotations showing what is visible have been added.
